It is National Library Week, and as an author I wish to state our libraries are one of the greatest assets we have in this country. These places of knowledge have stimulated learning and the love of reading for millions. Also I believe getting involved in support of the local library should be an obligation for every author.
In McCormick County, South Carolina we are blessed to have a very fine library. The Friends of the Library, a non-profit, has opened a storefront bookstore, Books on Main. In a few thousand square feet are thousands of used books for sale from 50 cents to a few dollars. The total operation is run by volunteers with all sales earmarked to making the library and its programs better. I offer a few hours of my time each month by manning the store.
I challenge each of my author friends to see how each of you can help to make your public libraries better. After all… without readers, what we write would go unread, and without libraries, there would be fewer readers to read our work.
