My intent for a Kindle special starting on Wednesday, April 22, is to donate 50% of royalties to an outstanding charity supporting Veterans. I posted this intent on social media, and I also contacted the charity to obtain the address for forwarding funds to the charity. Today I received an email from the charity stating, “We are thankful for and would certainly welcome any support you could provide, but we kindly ask that you do not state your donation is based on the sale of your product. Donations based off of sale of a product or percent of proceeds is known as a cause marketing campaign. These campaigns triggers commercial co-venture laws, which are highly regulated by both state and federal entities and if violated could put (Charity Name) charitable status in jeopardy.”
Although I will follow through on providing 50% of royalties earned during the promotion, I will refrain from any further identification of this fine organization during my promotion of my Kindle special.
